Cisco climbing its way back

Already working on an open-source data center switch project that will enable hardware competing with Cisco's (CSCO) Nexus switches, Facebook is now developing a networking fabric it claims will improve app deployment times and remove bottlenecks caused by traditional solutions (whether using Cisco or rival hardware), and also allow for easier management. The project revolves around creating a "flat" architecture in which rack size and connections are uniform. Software-defined networking startups such as Big Switch are also trying to overhaul how data center networks are built, with an eye towards enabling commodity hardware.
